Prompt #2

So we've watched and read about remixing practices. What sort of online technology practices do you engage in? How often and why?

  1. Prompt #2 Response:
As an avid user of the internet, I know that I have done many "illegal" things online, but I know for a fact that it isn't something I should be placed in jail for or even fined because come to think of it, there are a lot of other things that the government should be focusing on right now. Perhaps the act of illegally downloading music and transferring files to other people can be viewed as wrong, which I do agree is a form of stealing, but I think that there are too many laws hindering the public's ability to simply share ideas and be creative on the internet.

The copy right laws that pertain to the music business bring about an array of problems. For one, who really owns music? There are many times in the music industry that famous artists do not even write their own songs, or many just come up with beats or many times just sing the songs that producers come up with. What ever the logistics of it are, the main question is, who owns what? If I simply sample a song that, lets say Lady Gaga sings, but only use the beat behind the particular song, which Timberland created, who in fact am I "stealing" from? And am I in fact stealing if I only use the beat but create my own lyrics to the song? I think that the music business is an area that is meant to be creative and share your ideas with the world. If any artist puts out a song, do they not want people to sing along and enjoy their work? Because if that is the case, then why are all these laws prohibiting us from utilizing what they put out freely?

I know this does not only happen in music, but in any area where there are ideas being shared, music, movies, art, why does the government insist on stopping creativity burst from prior ideas. I think that the youth has all this information handed to them, and many of us are just looking to add on to what they find interesting and expanding their creative horizons. Times are changing and so should these laws in order to keep up with the technological world that we live in.
