Prompt #1

The response prompt this week is designed to get you comfortable with writing in a public forum and to create an opportunity for us to learn about one another. While the typical prompt will ask only one question, this week there are three questions to answer:

1. Tell us about a day you were especially happy.

2. Why did you select the University of Rochester?

3. What is your ultimate dream job? (feel free to be creative and make something up)

  1. 1) A day when I was especially happy must have been the day in September of last year when I went back to school after a long summer. I saw all of my friends and teachers and for once I was satisfied with my life.
    2) I selected the University of Rochester because I was offered great financial assistance and I am actually very close to one of my closest friends.
3)My dream job is to be one of the greatest actresses in the world and I also want to be a back up dancer to a famous artist. Hopefully it happens. (:

  4. 1.
A day that I recall being especially happy, was last January during the Long Island Cheer Leading Championships. It was a long awaited day and after a tiring season with many ups and downs, hard work, sweat and endless tears; the team that had went through so much together finally won the first championship in my towns history for cheer leading. It was by far one of my happiest days.

    2.
I chose the University of Rochester because, not only was my financial aid package the best from here, but this was also by far the best school academically I had applied to.

    3. I don't have exactly what I want to be, but I'm positive I want to work in a field with other people, and be helpful towards society, and defiantly live a comfortable life style.

    3) My dream job is to become a doctor. Whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when I "grew up", I would always say I wanted to become a doctor, without hesitation.

  7. 1) A happiest moment of my life was when I asked my parents to leave Nepal and come to the USA. I was mostly happy because they listened to me and I felt I am more responsible.

2)Financial offered was one of the main reasons that I chose University of Rochester. Moreover, my family had moved to the Rochester last summer. I was staying with my aunt for a year right after my family had moved to the Rochester. During that time I got chance to visit University of Rochester for several times and this is how I explored all the opportunities at University of Rochester. Eventually I found that University of Rochester has strong BME department. Therefore, Strong Biomedical Engineering program is another reason I chose University of Rochester.

3)My dream job is to invent something that nobody could think of it. It could be the care for the HIV/AID or something impossible. I will do prove this by participating in research project for the long period of time in my life.

  8. Throughout my 17 years of life I can look back and think of many exciting moments I have had. One day that I particularly remember is the day I went back to my home country Ethiopia. It was 10 years since I left to move to America and haven't seen my family since then. Many emotions ran through me as I was anxious to see my family and how they have changed but happy because I missed them more than they could ever know. Once the plane landed and I saw my aunts and uncles and cousins there waiting for me, I was overjoyed and excited. Nothing could replace that moment where I felt like I was on top of the world.

I selected the UofR because of it's prestigious background as one of the best schools in the country. I was advised by many of my family members and school counselors to attend this school. Also they were very generous with the money that they gave me and that is a big part of deciding what college to attend.

My ultimate dream job is to be a CEO of Google company. I have been fascinated with that company and they way they treat their employees. Not only are they one of the largest successful running companies but they are still relevant within society which guarantees my career to be long lasting. Also I have an obsession with computers so that would be a prefect place to work!

  9. 1) I am usually most happy when I am in Ecuador with my family. When I am in Ecuador I do not have many things to worry about. On a typical day in Ecuador, I wake up with the smell of my mom's cooking. After, we always plan a small trip or an activity we can do that day. The best part is being with my family. When I am in Ecuador I feel that I have enough time for my family, my friends and myself. Ecuador is an escape from all my worries, stress and work that I have back at home.
    2) I selected University of Rochester because it is a known to be a great school. I actually had no idea of the school until my adviser told me to just apply. During the time I submitted my application to when I heard back from the school, I learned to really like it. Then when I got my financial aid packet, I knew that I would be going to this school.
    3) I do not know what my ultimate dream job is. One thing I am sure of is that I want it to be something I love to do. I want to wake up every morning without dreading to go to work. I know that any job I pick, it will require a lot of work. I would not mind doing it if it is on something I am good at and I enjoy.

  10. I like to think of my life as a whole experience rather than a series of individual memories, so I will rather reflect on a period of time in which I was especially happy. That period of time that I am referring to is this past summer, actually all the months from March to August. I am a competitive swimmer, and every March marks the end of one championship season and the transition into the next. This March, my transition was moving up to a new squad. This meant training longer, harder, and with new people and a new coach. As intimidated and apprehensive as I was, this transition turned out to be one of the best things that has ever happened to me because I became part of a new family. My teammates pushed me to greater trainging heights and supported me 100% through the lowest of performances. My coach believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself and never once let me give up on my dreams. The girls on my team became my sisters because they were emotionally, mentally, and physically on the same level as me in school, in sports, and in life. The guys on my team were protective of me, and provided the best bear hugs I could ever ask for. I miss those. My laughs were a result of these people. My smiles stemmed from their words and their love. I was truly happy in those months, and my world felt safe. My world then was filled with love, both in my home and especially outside. That is the kind of happiness I wish I could always have in my life.

To be honest, the University of Rochester was not one of my first choices simply because it is so far away. I am one who has never been away from home, and I did not feel that I was ready to go so far away. However, when I visited, I was surprised to find that I felt more in place here than at any of my other college visits. Dean Burdick's speech inspired me, and spoke to me in both my heart and my mind. Everyone was so passionate and so dedicated to their education, and had such broad interests. I knew this would be a place that I could grow, develop, and mature as an individual. This was a place I had confidence that I could become someone that I, and all my loved ones, would be proud of.

I love cupcakes. I know that sounds like a silly, goofy statement, but cupcakes to me are the cutest things in the world. Cupcakes are just bites of happiness. So my dream job would be to own my very own cupcake bakery, specializing in all different kinds of cupcakes. There would be cupcakes of all different varieties with all kinda of unique names. All the ingredients would be of the best quality. The shop would be decorated in the most cheerful of neon colors, or in different shades of pink. Other than that, my only requirement would be that my employees have the same kind of enthusiasm and kid friendly attitude that I would like to carry throughout life. I hope it's okay to always be a kid at heart...(:

  11. **Sorry, I thought mine was too short compared to the other writings, so I just wrote again.. :)

I have a little brother who is twelve years younger than me. I thought that he is a baby and he will be a baby forever. I thought he could not give any advices in my life. I thought this age difference never can be disappeared. However, when my little brother said 'I love you!' to me first time two years ago, I felt like I didn't need any advices any more. I was filled with some feelings that cannot be described. Those three words are still one of my powerful magic words that make me extremely happy.

I selected the University of Rochester mainly because I loved its open curriculum and its size. When I found out that University of Rochester only have one mandatory course, writing, I was strongly attracted by this particular school. I wanted to focus on my major and I was scared of studying English or History at the University. In addition, winning Dean's Scholarship also closely affected my decision to come to University of Rochester. I thought this school could help me a lot financially.

My ultimate dream job is being a great biomedical engineer contributing to all society. It would be awesome if my job enables people to live more comfortable and safer life. To be honest, I still don't know exactly what biomedical engineers can do for people or how biomedical engineering is different from all the other engineerings. I'll figure it out soon in the class, at the University of Rochester.

  12. Response from David:
    1) A day when I was especially happy is still the day when I got my admissions letter from the University of Rochester a year ago. I made a right choice, and I had a great Freshman year here. I hope this school year will go well as well. :)

    2) I selected the University of Rochester not only because of the program the school offers to me for my major, but also because of the right school size for me.

    3) I am studying Business and my dream job is to be a successful businessman like my father. I am also interested in Art. I wish to inherit my father's job in the future and build an Art department for the company.

  13. A day I was particularly happy was a rainy afternoon just a few days ago. I had taken my son to Seabreeze, a local amusement park, when suddenly it began to rain. And not just small drops or mists of rain. We experienced a torrential downpour. It began to thunder and there was lightning in the sky. All the rides shut down and we had no choice but to go home. We arrived home, drenched, clothes dripping wet, the sky still storming when I suddenly realized how quiet the street was. No cars, no neighbors, no noise other than the thunder overhead. My son ran to the nearest puddle and jumped in, announcing his action, "BIG splash!", when I decided to join in. We splashed in the biggest puddles we could find and raced twigs and leaves in the stream that had formed between the curb and the road. We played for over an hour until the rain finally stopped and we went inside for hot chocolate. It was wonderful to be a kid with my kid.

I came to the University of Rochester because they had a doctoral program in education. I am currently going to school for a Ph.D. in Teaching and Curriculum.

My dream job? This is it!

  14. Michelle, why do you want to become a doctor? I was the same way when people would ask me, and the reasons for me choosing so have always changed. I think they are still changing, and I'm not sure if I'll ever really come up with a definitive answer aside from the obvious wanting to help people aspect (:

I was able to relate 100% with your post. As I wrote in my post, Ecuador is the one place in this world in which I am 100% happy. There are alot of emotions seeing family members after a long time. I imagine your experience was more emotional than mine because I see my family every year.
I also realized that I came to the school for the same reasons you did. This college rank high and the money they gave me was more than what other schools gave me. I remember you told me once that you wanted to go to Syracuse, the funny part was that I also wanted to go to Syracuse. I wanted to go to Syracuse for the pre-med program. Here, I am not sure what I want to major in so I am not sure what my dream job will be. I was interested to read you are doing engineering because recently I have been debating if I should do that. I know it is a challenging major, but I know it will be worth it.
